Kayla’s journey with kidney disease began in 2011 when she fractured her left arm and incidentally discovered that her kidney function was not normal and she had protein in her urine. An urgent visit with a nephrologist was very revealing where she learned she was likely born with a small right kidney and developed an overwork syndrome in her left kidney. Despite aggressive treatment of her underlying kidney disease, her left kidney began to fail. After thorough discussion of all her treatment options, Kayla ultimately opted for peritoneal dialysis with the ultimate goal of timely transplantation and at only 21 years of age, Kayla’s journey is only beginning. The numerous visits back and forth to the doctors, dialysis and several hospitalizations, the financial burden alone has been too much to bear for someone so young. She has had her ups and downs with peritoneal dialysis, but looks forward to the hope of receiving a kidney transplant in the near future.
